Adkar-Bhosale go down fighting in Chennai Open final after historic run; singles final postponed to Monday

Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, November 8: Vaishnavi Adkar and Rutuja Bhosale’s memorable campaign at the Chennai Open International Women’s Tennis Championships 2026 ended with a 6-2, 6-0 defeat against Switzerland’s Simona Waltert and Naima Karamoko in the doubles final here at the SDAT Tennis Stadium on Sunday. The Indian pair had become the first all-Indian combination to reach a WTA Tour-level doubles final.

Adkar and Bhosale struggled to reproduce the form that had carried them to the championship match, finding it difficult to settle into the contest as the Swiss pairing took control from the opening exchanges.

Karamoko was particularly influential at the net, displaying excellent anticipation and sharp reflexes to intercept the Indian pair’s returns and close down angles. Waltert complemented her partner’s efforts with a strong serve and deep groundstrokes, consistently putting the Indians under pressure. Their aggressive approach and superior net play left Adkar and Bhosale with few opportunities to build momentum.

The Swiss pair secured the opening set 6-2 before producing an even more dominant display in the second, wrapping up the title with a 6-0 scoreline. It’s 29-year-old Karamoko’s first WTA doubles title and second for 25-year-old Waltert.

Aadhav Arjuna, Minister for Sports Development and PWD, Government of Tamil Nadu, presented the trophies and prize cheques to the winners and runners-up.

Waltert and Karamoko received a prize cheque of US$13,000 (approximately ₹12,35,000) and 250 ranking points, while the Indian runners-up earned US$7,650 (approximately ₹7,26,000) and 163 ranking points.

Meanwhile, the singles summit clash between top seed and defending champion Janice Tjen of Indonesia and third seed Magda Linette of Poland has been postponed to Monday, November 9, at 11 AM.

The skies opened soon after the conclusion of the doubles final, and heavy smoke later engulfed the SDAT Tennis Stadium due to Diwali fireworks, preventing the singles championship match from getting underway.

The tournament organisers announced the rescheduling through an official notice, confirming that tickets issued for November 8 would remain valid for entry on November 9.

The 2026 edition marks the final staging of the Chennai Open in India, with the tournament set to move to the Philippines next year.
