Basavareddy reels off 6 straight games to take command in Brussels

Indian-American 3rd seed Nishesh Basavareddy (USA, 139) produced a clean indoor display at the BNP Paribas Fortis European Open, dropping just 3 games against Lithuania’s Edas Butvilas (LTU, 199) to move within 1 win of the ATP 250 main draw. Entering with a 15.08 UTR singles rating against 14.60 for Butvilas, the 21-year-old won 74% (23/31) of his 1st-serve points and held all 7 of his service games.

After both players held through the opening 4 games, Basavareddy saved 2 break points in a 10-point hold for 2-2 before breaking Butvilas in the 5th game. That hold sparked a 6-game run that carried him from 2-2 in the 1st set to a 2-0 lead in the 2nd set, including another clutch hold from 15-40 down at 5-2 to seal the 37-minute opener.

Basavareddy maintained pressure on the return throughout the 44-minute 2nd set, winning 80% (8/10) of points on Butvilas’s 2nd serve. After Butvilas got on the board for 2-1, the former Stanford standout reeled off the final 4 games of the match, breaking twice more to close out the victory on his 2nd match point. The win avenges his 6-4, 6-3 defeat to Butvilas in the 2024 Charleston Challenger final.
