India’s 🇮🇳 Sumit Nagal will face home favourite 🇰🇷 Hyeon Chung in the second singles rubber of the Davis Cup Qualifiers Round 2 tie against South Korea in Seoul tomorrow.

The match will follow the opening singles clash between Dhakshineswar Suresh and Soonwoo Kwon, with play beginning at 10:30 AM IST. The India–Korea tie is being played on September 18 and 19 at the Olympic Park Tennis Centre in Seoul, with the winner progressing to the Davis Cup Final 8.

Nagal, a former World No. 68, brings plenty of Davis Cup experience into the contest. After breaking into the Top 100 in 2024, the Indian has slipped outside the elite bracket and is now looking to climb back up the rankings.

Standing across the net will be a familiar and accomplished opponent in Chung. The Korean reached the 2018 Australian Open semifinals, defeating Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic during his memorable run. He subsequently climbed to a career-high World No. 19 in April 2018.

Chung’s career has since been interrupted by recurring injuries, including a lower-back issue that kept him away from singles competition for an extended period. He is currently ranked World No. 549.

The conditions could add another layer to the contest. Nagal said the Seoul court is slow and expects it to become even slower as the day progresses, making patience and physical endurance important factors. He also knows Chung well, having practised and played doubles with him in the past.

With the home crowd behind Chung and Nagal carrying India’s singles hopes, the second rubber promises to be an intriguing battle between two players with very different journeys over the past few years.
