Turin, Italy – November 11, 2024
Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden faced a challenging start to their Nitto ATP Finals journey on Monday, falling to Italy’s Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori in straight sets in the Bob Bryan Group. The Italian duo, spurred by a passionate home crowd, clinched the match 6-2, 6-3 in under an hour, making an emphatic statement in their tournament debut.
Bopanna and Ebden, the experienced pair, couldn’t overcome the intensity of Bolelli and Vavassori’s opening barrage. Vavassori, a Turin native, fired a blistering forehand return to break Bopanna’s serve early in the first set, establishing a rhythm the Italians maintained throughout. The hosts dominated their first serves, winning 13 of 14 points, and crafted eight break-point chances, capitalizing on two to wrap up the set quickly.
Despite their best efforts, Bopanna and Ebden struggled to find momentum against the Italians’ relentless pace and precision. Monday’s result takes Bolelli and Vavassori to a 3-2 lead in their Lexus ATP Head2Head with the Indo-Australian team and marks a confident 1-0 start in their group. Meanwhile, Bopanna and Ebden will look to bounce back in their remaining round-robin clashes, with crucial matches ahead against Germany’s Kevin Krawietz/Tim Puetz and Marcelo Arevalo/Mate Pavic.
The defeat has set a challenging path forward, but Bopanna and Ebden remain determined to fight for a spot in the knockout rounds.
