Yuki Bhambri spoke to Nithish from Indian Tennis Daily after his quarter-final win at the ATP Munich Open, sharing his thoughts on the game and much more.

Thoughts on today’s match

Tough conditions, obviously the scoreline doesn’t tell the story of how many start stops we had with a hail storm, with rain delays, with the court, being wet and it being freezing. These are probably the coldest conditions I’ve ever played a tennis match in outdoors. Tough but yeah, happy that we sort of stuck to the game plan and really pulled through today.

You had a really tough game yesterday against the winners from last week. Did the win help you in gaining confidence?

Of course, every time you play well and you can get a win against an in form team, it helps your confidence. Great to get a few matches in, great to get the win yesterday and today as well and hopefully we can keep progressing and keep going forward in the event.

This year, your partnerships with different pairs have been somewhat inconsistent, but you’ve reached the semi-finals at Marrakech with Albano. Is there a plan to continue playing with him for a longer time?

It is, at least as of now, to play the whole of clay court season, to try and play all the French. Of course, I think a lot of partnership also depends on results, that’s the way it is.  You might want to play with certain individuals, but if the results aren’t good or the ranking isn’t similar, it’s difficult. That’s the nature of doubles, but I’ve been fortunate to have some good partners and hopefully we can get to the finals this time and go on and keep winning. Playing the whole clay court season with Albano and then from there on we look forward.

How hard is it to adapt to clay court from hard courts? Your game is more suited to the hard courts.

I think it’s a little bit easier playing doubles, maybe not so much as singles. Yes, a little bit less smooth, but of course you have to be a lot more patient, you have to be ready to hit a lot more balls, be ready to slide. The movement is always the most difficult part, the most difficult adaptation. Especially coming from a hard court playing nation, we’re all pretty much in hard courts. I do take some time, but thankfully I’ve adjusted well. I had a good start on the clay in Marrakech and another ATP semi-finalist over here in Munich. So far, so good.
