The Indian women’s tennis team’s journey in the Billie Jean King Cup 2024 Asia/Oceania Group I took a turn on Wednesday as they fell to the host nation China by a score of 3-0.
This result comes after a dominant opening win for India against Pacific Oceania, where they secured a clean sweep with straight-set victories in all three rubbers.
China Proves Too Strong
While India entered the match with hopes of an upset, the Chinese team proved to be a formidable opponent.
Match 1 : Xinyu Wang (43, CHN) d. Sahaja Yamalapalli (311, IND) : 6-2 6-3
Match 2 : Qinwen Zheng (7,CHN) d. Ankita Raina (255,IND) : 6-0 6-0
Match 3 : Hanyu Guo/Xiyu Wang d. Rutuja Bhosale/Prarthana Thombare : 6-1 6-1
This loss also extends India’s struggles against China in the Billie Jean King Cup. In their previous meeting during the 2023 edition, China emerged victorious with a 3-0 scoreline.
Looking Ahead
Despite the setback, India’s Billie Jean King Cup campaign isn’t over. The team will still be aiming to progress through the Group I stage. India who are currently at the 4th place in the pool will take on Chinese Taipei tomorrow in a crucial tie.
The top two teams will win promotion to the 2024 Billie Jean King Cup Play-offs, while the bottom two teams will be relegated to Asia/Oceania Group II in 2025.
