Rohan Bopanna To Lose No.1 Ranking

Rohan Bopanna’s historic tenure at the No. 1 spot in the Pepperstone ATP Doubles Rankings is set to conclude after a five-week reign. This confirmation follows Ivan Dodig and Austin Krajicek’s victory in their 2nd round match against Alexander Zverev and Marcelo Melo at Indian Wells today. Bopanna and Ebden, who were defending champions at Indian Wells, were defeated in a close first round of the Indian Wells Masters yesterday against against Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen, thus resulting in a loss of 1000 ranking points.

Bopanna had climbed to the top of the rankings in January after his Australian Open triumph alongside Ebden. Then 43 years old, Bopanna had made history by becoming the oldest first-time World No. 1 in the rankings. He was also the third Indian player, following Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi (with whom Bopanna won two titles), to achieve the feat.

“India needed this,” Bopanna had said after his Australian Open quarter-final, when he secured his ascent to No. 1. “We don’t really have many tennis players coming up.”

But the good news for Indian Tennis fans is that Bopanna/Ebden have 0 points to defend at the upcoming Miami Masters, since the pair had lost in the first round in Miami last year. So they will have a solid chance to regain the No.1 ranking with a good performance.
