22 September 2022, New Delhi: India’s capital New Delhi will host the first-ever Legends Tennis League (LTL) from Friday, 23 September to Sunday, 25 September 2022 at RK Khanna Tennis Stadium. With the support of the Delhi Lawn Tennis Association (DLTA), this is the first time a tennis league is being organised for the Indian senior players who play on ITF Masters Tour which was until recently known as ITF Seniors Tour.
“We are proud to welcome some of the best senior tennis players from India, Singapore and the United States to New Delhi. Every player I’ve spoken to is excited to play in this league. It’s going to be a great event,” announced Dilip Mohanty, the organiser of LTL at the time of the LTL auction on Sunday, 18 September 2022 at DLTA.
The debut season consists of six teams named Akross Acers, Aviraj Warriors, Bangalore Challengers, Punjab Aces, Rebound Ace Stag Babolat Yoddhas and Tennis Titans. Each team will play against the other once and the top four teams will advance to the final rounds where they will play qualifiers, eliminators and the final in the style of cricket’s Indian Premier League.
The league features more than 50 players from age 30 to age 70. Former Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup players like Ranjeet Virali-Murugesan, Vivek Shokeen, Vijayant Malik and Radhika Tulpule-Kanitkar are among the players who are participating in this league. The players are divided into nine categories – Men’s Star Player, Men’s 35+, Men’s 40+, Men’s 45+ Stars, Men’s 45+ Kings, Men’s 55+, Men’s 60+, Men’s Wild Card and Women’s 35+.
Ready to welcome all the players, DLTA Administrator Col Ranbir Chauhan said, “We must acknowledge the efforts of organisers of this league. What a fantastic idea – a league for seniors tennis players in India is groundbreaking and it is our privilege of hosting all the players.”
The LTL matches will be streamed live on the YouTube channel of the Sportzworkz network.
