“She has got a very bright future ahead”: Robin Montgomery on Maaya Rajeshwaran after Chennai Open quarter-final

Chennai, November 6, 2026: Robin Montgomery ended Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi’s campaign at the WTA 250 Chennai Open on Friday, defeating the 17-year-old Indian wildcard 6-3 6-3 in the quarter-finals at the SDAT Tennis Stadium.

Speaking after the match, the American acknowledged the home support behind Maaya and said she dealt with it by keeping her attention on her own game.

“She was a home favorite. She plays free. I have been a home favorite before,” Montgomery said. “I was just focusing on what I can control. I did feel like I had some expectations on me, but like I said, I was focusing on what I can control.”

Montgomery, 22, is ranked No. 151 and went into the match more than 500 places above her opponent. Maaya, who is from Coimbatore, was playing her third match of the week in front of a home crowd in Tamil Nadu.

Montgomery also spoke about her opponent.

“It’s amazing. I am very glad to see someone like Maaya come up in our sport. I am very happy to get a chance to play against her here. She has got a very bright future ahead.”

Maaya, ranked No. 669, entered the main draw on a wildcard. She opened with a 6-4 2-6 7-6(5) win over eighth seed Katarzyna Kawa of Poland, then beat qualifier Weronika Falkowska 6-4 6-3 in the second round. That made her the first Indian woman since Sania Mirza in 2012 to reach a singles quarter-final at WTA Tour level, and the first Indian to reach the last eight at the Chennai Open.

At last year’s edition, Maaya lost in the first round to Shrivalli Bhamidipaty 6-1 6-4. Mirza remains the last Indian woman to reach a WTA singles semi-final, at Osaka in 2009.

Montgomery reached the quarter-finals by beating fourth seed Panna Udvardy 6-4 1-6 6-1, then came back from 5-3 down in the deciding set to beat Belgium’s Jeline Vandromme 6-4 3-6 7-5. Earlier this season, she won the WTA 250 title in ‘s-Hertogenbosch in June and reached the US Open women’s doubles final with Ashlyn Krueger.

She will face defending champion Janice Tjen in the semi-finals on Saturday.
