Maia, Portugal: India’s Sumit Nagal produced one of his gutsiest victories of the season at the ATP Challenger 100 in Maia, Portugal, pulling off a miraculous comeback to stun local favourite and second seed Henrique Rocha (ATP No. 106) 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(5) in the opening round.
Remarkably, the Round of 32 clash marked the first indoor clay match of Nagal’s career—and his first win over a player ranked near the Top 100 in almost a year.
Twice Breaking Back When Rocha Served for the Match
Entering the tournament ranked ATP No. 253, Nagal dropped the opening set 3-6 against the hard-hitting Portuguese second seed before digging deep in the second set to level the contest 7-5 and force a decider.
The third set turned into a thriller of the highest order. Backed by the home crowd in Maia, Rocha twice stepped up to the line to serve for the match—first at 5-4 and then again at 6-5. On both occasions, Nagal refused to yield, breaking the local hope twice under immense pressure to send the match into a deciding third-set tiebreak.
Even in the tiebreak, Nagal had to escape from the brink once more. Trailing 4-5 with Rocha holding two serves to seal the win, the Indian reeled off both points on the return to bring up match point at 6-5 before closing out a dramatic 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(5) victory on his own serve after nearly three hours of battle.
Rankings Context & The Push for Australian Open Qualifying
The breakthrough win arrives at a critical stage of the season for Nagal’s ranking and Grand Slam ambitions. With 37 ATP ranking points from two Challenger quarterfinal appearances last year dropping off his tally this week, Nagal slid to World No. 283—defending 7 of those points with his opening-round victory over Rocha.
To climb back inside or close to the Top 230 required for the Australian Open qualifying cutoff, Nagal needs roughly 40 to 50 points in the coming weeks. A deep run to a Challenger final—or a couple of semifinal finishes—would put him right back in contention for Melbourne Park, and toppling a player ranked on the cusp of the Top 100 provides a timely confidence boost.
Up Next: Round of 16 Rematch Against Luka Mikrut
Nagal’s reward in the Round of 16 is a familiar test against Croatia’s Luka Mikrut—an immediate rematch from last week’s Braga Challenger.
Mikrut defeated Nagal 6-2, 6-4 in Braga last week and currently holds a 2-0 head-to-head lead over the Indian, with both of their previous encounters coming on clay in Portugal. Riding the momentum of his great escape against Rocha, Nagal will be eager to turn the tables and claim his first win over the Croatian at the third attempt.
