Indian tennis wildcard Aryan Shah put up a spirited fight in his ATP Tour debut at the Mubadala DC Open qualifying rounds. Facing top-100 American Marcos Giron, the 20-year-old took an early 3–1 lead in the opening set before Giron’s experience prevailed in a close 7–5, 6–4 contest. Despite the loss, Shah displayed high-level tennis, strong composure under pressure, and proved he belongs on the big stage.

Q: What were your thoughts and expectations coming into this match?
Aryan Shah: I got a last-moment wildcard and had my debut on the ATP Tour, so there was nothing more I could ask for – to showcase my game style and see what level I’m capable of producing. I was playing a top-100 guy, who is really older to me, with lots of experience on Tour, especially Grand Slams. So I tried not to overthink who was on the other side of the net and just maintain my level.
Q: What was your strategy going up against an established top-100 player with the home crowd on his side? Aryan Shah: He’s an American player who’s been around for quite some time, while I’m a guy ranked around 750. There was a time when I was ranked 350 (laughs). People say ranking is just a number, but my ranking has experienced a serious dip – not a lot of great results in the last couple of months. I feel if I had a better ranking coming into this match, maybe I could have produced a better performance under pressure. I am not taking away the fact that I really fought hard and I gave it all. That was the main goal for today – fighting until the end. Even in the last game I had my chances, but I played a little too safe because I haven’t had a really good last couple of weeks, losing close matches like 5-7 or 6-7. So that really kicks into my mindset and I just have to deal with it better. It’s just a matter of more experience and matches at this level. I am sure I am going to get over that hurdle real quick.
Q: How did it feel seeing so many supporters out on Court 4 backing you today?
Aryan Shah: Credit to all the Indo-Americans who showed up! Court 4 was completely packed. It was maybe a 70–30 split for Giron, but having so many people out there cheering for me meant a lot. Shoutout to them and I am really thankful to everyone who came out.
Q: How did this last-minute wildcard opportunity come about for an ATP 500 event? It’s rare to see an Indian get a wildcard in a North American event!
Aryan Shah: I’ve been associated with IMG for about a year and a half, and my agent works really hard to manage off-court opportunities for me. He saw an opportunity of a wildcard in the last moment, and he asked me if I would like to take it. I was like “Damn”! I was actually in Europe losing early rounds at 25K events on clay. I was a bit hesitant because I was losing in early rounds of 25 and someone is asking me to go and play 500. But all it takes is one big win to turn around the losses – we have all seen Valentin Vacherot show up to tournaments as an Alternate and end up winning an ATP Masters 1000. So I went for it. Even though I didn’t get the win today, I’m really happy with the performance and level I showed.
Q: You recently joined Wake Forest for a semester. Are you planning to continue college or transition fully to the tour?
Aryan Shah: That’s still a bit of a mystery for everyone, including me! I joined as a freshman in the spring and wanted to see how this summer went. I still haven’t decided. We have seen a lot of big names come out of College. I must admit that College has been really helpful and the staff is amazing. It’s still an option for me. But I need a couple of weeks to evaluate my options and make a clear decision on whether to head back or stay fully on Tour.
Q: What does your upcoming schedule look like for the next few weeks?
Aryan Shah: I was originally scheduled to play a 25K in Denmark this week, but I would for sure leave a 25k for a 500! I get a bigger paycheck here as well, even though I lose in Qualies (laughs). No but jokes aside, now I’ll be heading back to Europe to grind on the Futures circuit again. My ranking is around 750, so I need to start opening the IPIN app (ITF) more than the Player Zone app (ATP). But the grind never stops. I’m really grateful to be able to play the events I can play. I’m really thankful for the support from everyone – especially from my parents and coaches.
