India’s top singles player Sumit Nagal bowed out in the quarterfinals of the ATP Moldova Open after going down to Greece’s Stefanos Sakellaridis (ATP 197) 1-6, 4-6 on Friday.
Sumit struggled to find his rhythm right from the start as Sakellaridis controlled the rallies and dictated play throughout the match. The Greek player took early command in the opening set and maintained the momentum in the second to close out the contest in straight sets.
Despite the defeat, it was a positive week overall for Sumit, who registered two solid wins earlier in the tournament. In the opening round, he defeated Sergey Fomin (ATP 294) 6-4, 6-2 before producing one of his best wins of the season against second seed Zdenek Kolar (ATP 162) 6-4, 7-6 in the pre-quarterfinals.
The quarterfinal finish marks Sumit’s best run in recent weeks as he looks to build momentum for the upcoming tournaments.
