Indian tennis star Yuki Bhambri and his Swedish partner Andre Goransson kicked off their BNP Paribas Open campaign with a resounding victory, defeating the duo of David Pel and Fabrice Martin in straight sets. The unseeded pair showcased a dominant performance, securing their spot in the second round with a final score of 6-1, 6-3.
From the outset, Bhambri and Goransson displayed exceptional chemistry and powerful play. They quickly asserted their dominance in the first set, breaking their opponents’ serve early and maintaining a high level of intensity. The precision of Bhambri’s groundstrokes combined with Goransson’s strong net play proved to be an effective strategy, leaving Pel and Martin struggling to find their rhythm.
The second set saw a similar display of control from Bhambri and Goransson. While Pel and Martin attempted to mount a comeback, the Indian and Swedish pair maintained their focus, capitalizing on crucial points and ultimately closing out the match with confidence.
“It’s not always going to be winning every point that you play. But I thought we were really solid today, not really giving David and Fabrice an opportunity to come back in the match. It was a really clean match. We did not leave the door open,” commented Bhambri following the victory.
The match was not without a few ups and downs in the second set, when the wind kicked up, and Martin and Pel tried to reassert themselves. However, Bhambri and Gorannson always had an answer.
When asked about the rapid change in conditions in the second set, Bhambri responded, “we try to just get acclimatized to the conditions. It’s been that way since day one when we got here. It is tough, but it was a lot better today than it has been the last couple days.”
This impressive win marks a strong start for Bhambri and Goransson in one of the most prestigious tournaments outside of the four Grand Slams. Their cohesive play and decisive victory will undoubtedly boost their confidence as they advance further into the BNP Paribas Open. Fans will be eager to see if they can maintain this momentum and continue their winning streak in the upcoming rounds.
Looking forward to the rest of the week, Bhambri said, “I love coming back here, it is a great place to play tennis.” He then commented in particular about the numerous Indian and Indian-origin fans in the audience: “It is so fantastic. It’s so far from home, so to get this kind of support is incredible.”
