The legendary Leander Paes, who always played out of his skin when representing India, has now taken that same passion and commitment off the court. On November 8, Paes officially assumed charge as the President of the Bengal Tennis Association (BTA), succeeding Hironmoy Chatterjee following the association’s Annual General Meeting.
Paes’ appointment marks a new chapter in his illustrious journey — a move from the tennis court to sports governance — as he aims to rejuvenate tennis in Bengal and beyond. He emphasized his commitment to grassroots development, infrastructure improvement, and creating opportunities for young players, saying, “Bengal has a proud tennis heritage. My goal is to create pathways for the next generation to excel both nationally and internationally.”
One of India’s most decorated athletes, Paes brings unmatched experience and leadership to the role. With 18 Grand Slam titles, an Olympic bronze medal, and a record-breaking Davis Cup career, his transition into administration adds a touch of star power to Bengal’s sporting landscape — much like Sourav Ganguly’s return as President of the Cricket Association of Bengal.
Now, as he leads from the front once more, Paes vows to take Bengal tennis to greater heights, just as he did for Indian tennis on the world stage.
