Vaishnavi Adkar Gets a Place in the Main Draw as a Lucky Loser at WTA Chennai Open 2025

India, Tamil Nadu, October 26, 2025: India’s campaign in the singles qualifying rounds of the WTA Chennai Open 2025 came to an end on Sunday, with 20-year-old Vaishnavi Adkar bowing out in the final round.

Adkar, ranked No. 661 in the world, put up a spirited fight but lost 2-6, 3-6 to France’s Astrid Lew Yan Foon, ranked No. 373. The victory sealed a place in the main draw of a WTA 250 event for the first time in the French player’s career.

However, New Zealand’s Lulu Sun pulled out of the tournament due to a scheduling problem, which gives Vaishnavi Adkar a place in the main draw as a lucky loser. She will face tournament third seed Donna Vekic of Croatia in the opening round.

Japan’s fifth seed Mei Yamaguchi produced the comeback of the day, rallying from a set down to defeat Australia’s third seed Arina Rodionova 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 and secure her main draw berth. The 26-year-old has enjoyed success in India before, having qualified for the WTA 125 Mumbai Open earlier this year, where she reached the second round.

Fourth seed Arianne Hartono of the Netherlands, who will also partner India’s Prarthana Thombare in doubles, cruised past Indonesia’s Priska Nugroho 6-2, 6-1 to enter the main draw. Sixth seed Caroline Werner of Germany came back from 0-5 down in the second set to defeat Thailand’s Thasaporn Naklo 6-3, 7-6(4) and seal her spot as well. This marks Werner’s second main draw appearance at the WTA 250 level or higher, following her qualifying success in Hamburg earlier this year.

Main draw action at the SDAT Tennis Stadium begins on Monday, October 27. The top seeds in the singles draw include Turkey’s Zeynep Sonmez and Great Britain’s Francesca Jones, seeded first and second respectively. Olympic silver medallist Donna Vekic of Croatia and 2022 Chennai Open champion Linda Fruhvirtova are also in contention.

India No. 1 Sahaja Yamalapalli will open her campaign against one of the qualifiers, while an all-Indian clash between Shrivalli Bhamidipaty and 16-year-old Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi will headline local interest in the first round.
