Following India’s monumental Davis Cup victory over Switzerland—their first win against a European nation in Europe since 1993—an elated Captain Rohit Rajpal spoke about the team’s hard-fought success and their plans moving forward into next year’s qualifiers.
Congratulations on winning the tie. How have you experienced everything and what are your feelings right now?
Well, I think, it’s a dream come true. You know, I’m told that after 1993, this is the first time we’re beating a European country in Europe, away from India. Of course, we’ve been winning matches in India, but it’s been quite a long gap since we won it here. So for that, we’re really, really, happy.
I think we put in a lot of work for the last few days. We got here early. And yeah, I think Davis Cup is tough. You know how it is. It has to go one way or the other. It went our way. [I’m] extremely happy with the boys. They put in a lot of hard work and they played very, very well. And they kept the level up, which was very important for us to do.
Now you’re in the qualifiers group for next year. What do you expect? What’s your outlook for the Indian Davis Cup team?
Yeah, so I think from here, we want to take the momentum into the next tie. I think the singles guys are doing quite, quite well this time. Our doubles team could have been better. But it was a close match and you know, this is how Davis Cup goes. It can go either way. I think the guys, your guys [Switzerland], played very, very well.
So, yeah, for us… when we know [who we play] for the next tie, we’re going to prepare equally hard and see if we can take things further for ourselves.
