Fifteen-year-old Indian tennis prodigy Maaya Revathi caused a major upset at the WTA L&T 125 Mumbai Open, defeating world No. 225 Iryna Shymanovich of Bulgaria 6-4, 6-1 in the opening round. Revathi’s victory marks a significant milestone in her burgeoning career.
“It was a really incredible match,” Revathi commented after her win. “I’m happy to win, actually, because, as I said, my first goal was to qualify. I was really prepared for my match today, and it didn’t go the exact way that I wanted to, but I’m still happy that I managed to win.”
When asked about her opponent, Revathi acknowledged the challenge. “She was very good. I mean, it wasn’t a very easy match, but she did play well.”
The match wasn’t without its dramatic moments. Revathi took a tumble on the court but quickly recovered to win the point. “I’m used to it,” she explained. “My racket was pretty close by, wasn’t very far. But I still feel bad about missing that shot because all that effort was, you know, not worth it.” Despite the fall, Revathi’s resilience and focus ultimately secured her a well-deserved victory.
