“I would like to thank Sunder Iyer for the Wild Card” – 15 yr old Maaya Revathi after defeating World No. 265

Indian Junior Prodigy 15-yr old Maaya Revathi scored a remarkable win over World No. 265 Nicole Fossa Huergo by 6-3 3-6 6-0 score line in the first qualifying round of the WTA 125 Mumbai Open.

Up next for the 15-yr old is WTA 427 Jessica Failla in the 2nd qualifying round

It was your WTA debut and you got your first win. How are you feeling?

I would like to thank MSLTA and Sunder Iyer to offer opportunity for a 15-year old of a Wild Card. I’m really happy to win my first match. I’m hoping to win the next one too.

Well, being just 15, how do you balance your school, your competitions and everything?

I keep traveling and I study online for now, but I’ll be joining school next month. The school will be very supportive and travel so and hopefully they support me so it’s not going to be a very issue.

What inspired you to start playing tennis at such a young age?

My dad was very keen that he wanted to put me on tennis court and tennis was pretty popular in Tamil Nadu so there were a few academies so I started playing and I gradually fell in love with the sport.

It was not the first time I started and I was very happy on both competing so I thought why not do.

You got the one year contract with one of the biggest academies. Can you share your happiness? Like how are you feeling about that?

I’m happy that Rafa Nadal Academy offered me an year contract with me and I was really happy to be with them so I was just looking to train somewhere in Europe and I was very happy that they took me in. So hopefully we have a good journey ahead.

I have one question. Did it surprise you that you had the level to compete with the top 300 player? Did you always have the belief that you could do this?

I always believed myself because I’ve been doing well in the junior circuit a bit and I’m 15 so I’m graduating for women’s first but I’ve played a a lot of juniors. So I was pretty sure that, I’m not going to say that I was going to win everything but I was pretty sure that I’ll be able to compete.
