Basavareddy Upsets Top-50 Player Shang at ATP Next Gen Finals

Jeddah, Saudi Arabia – December 20, 2024 – American teenager Nishesh Basavareddy pulled off a stunning upset at the ATP Next Gen Finals, defeating world No. 50 Juncheng Shang in a thrilling four-set match. The 19-year-old from Carmel, Indiana, triumphed with a final scoreline of 3-4(4), 4-2, 4-2, 4-1.

This victory marks Basavareddy’s first win over a Top 50 player and comes after a tough opening round loss to fellow American Alex Michelsen, currently ranked No. 41. Despite dropping the first set tie-break, Basavareddy showed remarkable resilience, rallying to take control of the match and secure a crucial win in the Red Group.

“I’m incredibly excited about this win,” said Basavareddy. “Playing in this stadium is a dream come true, and to get a victory against a top player like Shang is amazing. I’m just trying to enjoy every moment of this experience.”

Basavareddy, who is of Indian-American heritage, will next face former Junior French Open champion Luca Van Assche, currently ranked No. 128. This match will be pivotal in determining who advances to the semi-finals from the Red Group.
