In a special ceremony held on Tuesday, Indian tennis legend Vijay Amritraj was honored by the Tamil Nadu government as the North Stand of the Centre Court at the SDAT Tennis Stadium in Chennai was named after him. The tribute recognizes Amritraj’s immense contributions to Indian tennis and his global impact on the sport.

Tamilnadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin unveiled the ‘Vijay Amritraj Pavilion’ during a ceremony on the Centre Court.
“Vijay Amritraj’s illustrious contributions to the world of tennis and his unwavering commitment to the service of humanity will remain forever in our hearts and history. This recognition celebrates not only his sportsmanship but also his dedication towards the cause of humanity” – Udhayanidhi Stalin posted on X.
“An event that will remain in my memory forever. I was humbled and honored with this incredible gesture by the Tamil Nadu government. I hope it will continue to inspire further generations of sports men and women to take to sports in a big way.My grateful thanks to the Government of Tamil Nadu, Sports Development Authority of India and Tamil Nadu Tennis Association for this amazing accolade. I grew up ten minutes from this stadium and my life has come a full circle with this blessing. My dear parents would have loved it” – Vijay Amritraj shared on Instagram.
Indian tennis stars Somdev Devvarman and Prajnesh Gunneswaran along with officials from TNTA, Tamil Nadu government representative and ministers attended the event.
