India’s best Sumit Nagal, currently ranked 83rd in the world, will face Chinese wildcard Yibing Wu in the first round of the prestigious ATP Shanghai Masters 1000.
Wu, ranked as high as 54th just last year, has been grappling with injuries this season, causing his ranking to drop to 564. Despite the setback, the 24-year-old showed promise by winning an ATP Challenger event in Jinan, China last month.
This match will mark Nagal’s main draw debut at the Shanghai Masters. Nagal had played in the qualifying last year, but had lost to Australia’s Luke Saville. Nagal is on a six-match losing streak, and has been struggling with a back issue of his own. A victory here would be crucial for his progress on the ATP Tour. Wu, however, will have home-court advantage and some recent momentum after winning the Challenger last month, making this an exciting first-round clash.
The match is expected to be played on Wednesday, 2nd October, with the exact Order of Play expected to be released on Tuesday evening.
