Indian Tennis star Sumit Nagal has secured his spot in the singles main draw of the ATP Shanghai Masters 1000 event, Asia’s lone Masters event. The event will be played on outdoor hard courts in Shanghai, China from 2-13 October, 2024. He will become the first Indian since Somdev Devvarman in 2011 to play in the Shanghai Main Draw.
This will be the 3rd ATP Masters 1000 main draw appearance of Nagal’s career, with all of them coming in an already stellar 2024 season for Nagal. His other two appearances came in Indian Wells (l. to Raonic) and Monte-Carlo, where he became the first Indian in 42 years to qualify for the main draw. He also became the first Indian ever to win a main draw match there, eventually losing to the then World No.7 Holger Rune in three sets.
Nagal, who is currently ranked 82 in the ATP Rankings, had played in the Shanghai Masters qualifying last year, losing to Luke Saville from Australia in straight sets. He is currently struggling with a back issue that has sidelined him from the upcoming Davis Cup tie against Sweden on 14-15 September. However, Nagal is expected to make a return to competition at the ATP 250 Hangzhou Open starting on 18th September in China.
Here’s his upcoming tournament schedule:
18 Sep: ATP 250 Hangzhou Main Draw
26 Sep: ATP 500 Beijing Qualies
2 Oct: ATP 1000 Shanghai Masters Main Draw
