Donald Young and Taylor Townsend to Play for Mixed Doubles Title
The US Open mixed doubles dream of Rohan Bopanna and Aldila Sutjiadi came to a halt in the semifinals, as they lost to the American wildcard pairing of Donald Young and Taylor Townsend, 3-6, 4-6. The 8th-seeded Indo-Indonesian team fought valiantly, clawing back from a 0-3 deficit in the first set to level it at 3-3, but couldn’t sustain the momentum against the red-hot all-leftie duo.
For Donald Young, this US Open holds special significance as his final professional tournament. Reflecting on his unexpected run to the finals during the post-match on-court interview, Young shared his deep pride and joy:
“I just knew Taylor and I could do well if we got hot. I haven’t played competitive this year, but Taylor has been playing great. When I saw her practising before the tournament, I told her I wasn’t going to be too heavy and am going to play light. But I have come out and played well and I’m super happy. This is a dream come true. I am so proud.”
Adding a personal touch, Young reminisced about his long-standing connection with Townsend:
“I used to play Monopoly with Taylor and her sister when we were younger. So it’s been crazy for me to see her grow up and mature like this. It’s just awesome, and it’s hard to put into words.”
Townsend, who has been in exceptional form throughout the tournament, echoed the sentiment but remains focused on the task ahead:
“Donald and I have made the semis a couple of times. So making the finals is special. Let me tell you—job’s not done. We got one more match to go.”
The American duo now look to cap their incredible journey with a Grand Slam title, with Young hoping for a fairytale ending to his career.
