Indian tennis star Rohan Bopanna and his Indonesian partner, Aldila Sutjiadi, have stormed into the US Open mixed doubles semifinals after a thrilling victory over the 4th-seeded duo of Australia’s Matthew Ebden and Czech Republic’s Barbora Krejčíková. The 8th seeds triumphed in a nail-biting match, winning 7-6(4), 2-6, 10-7.
Despite being down 0-3 in the first set, Bopanna and Sutjiadi fought back to claim the tiebreak. Though they stumbled in the second set, the pair held their nerve in the decisive match tiebreak to clinch the win. They were up 8-2 in the tiebreak, before Ebden/Krejcikova pulled it back to 8-7. However, two timely big serves by Bopanna sealed the deal for our pair. The duo will take on the winner of the match between Danilina/Heliovaara and wildcards Young/Townsend.
This victory is particularly significant given their opponents’ impressive credentials—Ebden is the reigning Olympic gold medalist in men’s doubles, and Krejčíková is the reigning Wimbledon singles champion.
For Bopanna, this marks a repeat of his best US Open performance in mixed doubles, equalling his 2015 semifinal run.
