In a thrilling match at the US Open mixed doubles, Rohan Bopanna and Aldila Sutjiadi pulled off a massive comeback, defeating the reigning Olympic gold medalist pair John Peers and Katerina Siniakova. After losing the first set 0-6, Bopanna/Sutjiadi bounced back to win 0-6, 7-6(5), 10-7 in a closely contested super tiebreak.
Peers, who won Olympic gold in men’s doubles with Matt Ebden, and Siniakova, the mixed doubles gold medalist with Tomas Machac, were heavy favorites, especially after Set 1. However, the Indo-Indonesian duo dug deep, with the support of the India-dominated crowded, to secure a spot in the quarterfinals.
Bopanna will now face his regular partner Matt Ebden, who is partnered with reigning Wimbledon singles champion Barbora Krejcikova, in what promises to be another exciting showdown.
