2024 US Open: Sumit Nagal Falls to World No. 40 Tallon Griekspoor in Round 1

India’s Sumit Nagal faced a tough challenge in the opening round of the 2024 US Open, losing to World No. 40 Tallon Griekspoor in straight sets, 1-6, 3-6, 6-7(6). Despite a slow start, Nagal showed signs of resurgence in the third set, serving for it at 6-5 and earning two set points in the tiebreak. However, the Dutchman held his nerve to close out the match.

This defeat extends Nagal’s winless streak against Top 100 opponents to 10 matches, dating back to the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters. A big Indian crowd was in the stadium to support Nagal. Nagal is slated to play in the Davis Cup tie against Sweden in Sweden next, before moving on to the Asian hard-court swing, starting with the ATP 250 in Hangzhou from Sep 16, where he has a direct entry.
