Former World No. 12 Borna Coric defeated India’s Sumit Nagal in the first round of the ATP 250 Winston-Salem Open. The Croatian, who reached the semifinals of the tournament last year, overpowered Nagal with a straight-sets victory, winning 6-4, 6-2 in 68 minutes.
Coric, a former Cincinnati Masters champion, showcased his experience and powerful baseline game to outmaneuver Nagal, who is ranked 74th. With this win, Coric advances to the second round, keeping his hopes alive for another deep run at Winston-Salem.
Speaking to TennisTV after the match, Coric said – “I just stayed calm and I was feeling very good on the court today. I knew I just needed to be patient and my time would come. The fast and bouncy conditions here helped me. It’s much quicker during the day as well. I was serving good and picking spots well. Very happy with my performance today.”
