Vijay Amritraj: A Journey of Dreams, Dedication, and National Pride

In a moving speech at his induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame, Indian tennis legend Vijay Amritraj shared his incredible journey, reflecting on the challenges, triumphs, and the profound impact of his career on both his life and his country.

Early Aspirations and the Power of Belief

Amritraj began by recounting how, growing up in India, the International Tennis Hall of Fame seemed like an unattainable dream. “We didn’t quite know enough about it until we were first told about it,” he said. “And it came much later in my career to even hear about the International Tennis Hall of Fame. And I think it was such a distant goal or it was so far away, rather, like when we started playing tennis and London was too far to get to, Wimbledon was too far to even imagine.”

Yet, his parents instilled in him the power of belief and the importance of pursuing dreams, even those that seemed beyond reach. “I’ve always been very amazed at my parents who actually imagined things and believed in things that perhaps you couldn’t dream or imagine at the time.”

A Life’s Education

Amritraj emphasized that his journey in tennis had been his greatest education, teaching him not only about the world and the people he met but also about himself. “It has taught me so much, not just about the world, everyone that I’ve met, but mostly about yourself and what you can do if you set your mind to it in any line of work.” The Hall of Fame induction, he said, was a moment of profound reflection, “a flash of my memory. My whole life from age 7 to age 70 flashed before me as to what it entailed and what my parents went through and eventually where it has gotten me.”

India at Center Court

Throughout his career, Amritraj always felt he represented India. “For me, it was always India on the Centre Court. It was the Indian people who supported me all over the place that I played and took me to places that I never dreamt I would go. I knew at the end of the day, I had to deliver 60, 70% of tennis. They were going to give the other 30 or 40%, on their own, which they did time and time again.” His induction, he said, was an honor not just for himself but for his entire country. “To me, it is basically India being honored today with us both being in the Hall of Fame at this point in time. So it is a very, very special moment for the Indian anthem and Indian tricolor.”

The Pressure and Privilege of Representing India

Amritraj acknowledged the immense pressure that comes with representing the world’s largest democracy. He recalled the words of Billie Jean King, “Pressure is a privilege.” Every challenge is an opportunity. “Very few people are given this pressure because we are representing the largest democracy in the world, the largest sporting fraternity in the world. Though cricket might be a religion, the other sports people are waiting for people to excel in that and to be able to put the tricolor on the world map.”

Shifting Cultural Perspectives on Sport

Amritraj discussed the cultural shift in India regarding sports. In the past, sports were often seen as a leisurely activity, not a viable career path. “When I was growing up and playing on the tour for the first time and left India with three and a half pounds in my pocket, I had to win in the afternoon to be able to eat at night. At that time, people would say to my parents, ‘Yes, they play tennis, but what do they do for a living?’ And it was hard to answer that question.”

Leander Paes: A Turning Point

Amritraj highlighted the significance of Leander Paes’s arrival on the tennis scene. Paes’s incredible talent and quickness on the court demonstrated that Indians could excel at the highest level. Amritraj’s mother, he said, was particularly enamored with Paes, recognizing his potential.

A Legacy of Inspiration

Amritraj concluded by expressing his pride in the progress India has made in embracing sports as a profession. He believes that the cultural perception has shifted, and people no longer question whether one can make a living through sports. His journey, and the journey of other Indian athletes like Leander Paes, has paved the way for future generations to dream big and pursue their passions.

Vijay Amritraj’s Hall of Fame induction speech is a testament to his remarkable career, his unwavering love for India, and the power of dreams, dedication, and national pride. His story is an inspiration to all who dare to dream big and challenge the status quo.
