Indian tennis star Sumit Nagal has been on a tear the past two weeks on European clay. His impressive run culminated in a title win at the ATP 100 Heilbronn tournament in Germany, followed by a runner-up finish at the Perugia Challenger event in Italy. These stellar performances have propelled him up the ATP rankings, making him the 4th highest ranked Indian tennis player in history.
It is worth mentioning that the legendary Ramanathan Krishnan was ranked 6 in the world, but the ATP Rankings were not introduced yet at the time.
Nagal’s climb has been nothing short of remarkable. Just a year ago, he was ranked outside the top 500. This achievement puts him in elite company alongside some of India’s tennis legends.
Currently, Nagal sits behind legends like Vijay Amritraj (career-high 18th), Ramesh Krishnan (career-high 23rd), and Somdev Devvarman (career-high 62nd). It will be interesting to see how far Nagal can go.
