SUMTER, South Carolina – Sahaja Yamalapalli, the Indian No. 2 tennis player, secured her spot in the quarterfinals of the ITF W75 event in Sumter, South Carolina, after defeating 19-year-old Katrina Scott in a thrilling three-set match 6-4, 2-6, 6-1.
Scott, a former top-150 player with impressive credentials, including a recent W35 event win and two US Open appearances, presented a formidable challenge for Yamalapalli. However, the 23-year-old from Hyderabad showcased her resilience and determination, ultimately prevailing in the decisive third set.
This victory marks a significant confidence booster for Yamalapalli, who earlier achieved a straight-sets win over University of Texas athlete Charlotte Chavatipon in the first round, 7-5, 6-1.
Yamalapalli’s remarkable run in Sumter will now see her face the tournament’s top seed, Maria Mateas, in the quarterfinals. The match promises to be an exciting showdown between two talented players.
