‘It felt like 40 degrees out there’ – Sumit Nagal, after qualifying for the Aus Open Main Draw

India’s Sumit Nagal delivered a sensational performance under sweltering Melbourne conditions to upset 14th seed and former World No. 38 Alex Molcan of Slovakia 6-4, 6-4 in the final round of the Australian Open qualifying on Friday. This hard-fought victory secures Nagal’s place in the Grand Slam’s main draw, marking a triumphant return to the tournament after his debut appearance in 2021.

Nagal’s victory was far from straightforward. He battled not only Molcan’s skilled game but also the scorching Australian heat and physical issues that threatened to derail his efforts. Despite these challenges, Nagal showcased remarkable resilience and determination, outlasting his opponent in crucial moments to claim the win.

“I’m thrilled to be back in the Australian Open main draw,” an elated Nagal said after his victory. “It was a very tough match, both physically and mentally. The conditions were brutal, and I also had some physical issues to deal with. But I’m happy that I was able to stay focused and come through in the end.”

Nagal’s win is a significant boost for Indian tennis. He becomes the only Indian player, male or female, to qualify for the Australian Open main draw this year, and his achievement serves as an inspiration to aspiring players nationwide.

Looking ahead, Nagal faces a tough challenge in the first round of the main draw. He will take on Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan, a talented player known for his big serve and aggressive game. However, Nagal’s fighting spirit and newfound confidence will give him a chance to create even more magic at the Australian Open.

“It felt like 40 degrees. Not sure what the actual temperature was. The match against Bublik is going to be a short one. He doesn’t like to play long rallies. The key would be to neutralize his serve”, said Nagal.
