India’s Sumit Nagal overcame a slow start and displayed impressive resilience to defeat talented 19-year-old Australian wildcard Edward Winter 6-3, 6-2 in the second round of the Australian Open qualifying on Thursday.
Nagal, ranked 139th in the world, started sluggishly, going down 2-0 early in the first set. However, he displayed remarkable fighting spirit, winning 12 of the next 15 games to win the match.
This win puts Nagal just one victory away from his second Australian Open main draw appearance. He will face the winner of the clash between Slovakian Alex Molcan and Australian veteran John Millman, who’s playing in his final tournament, on Friday, and a triumph will secure his place in the Grand Slam tournament.
“I started a bit nervously, but I’m happy with the way I came back,” said Nagal after his victory. “Winter is a talented player, but I stayed focused and played some aggressive tennis. I’m confident in my game, and I’m looking forward to the challenge tomorrow.”
Nagal’s comeback win showcased his mental strength and ability to handle pressure. His experience and powerful baseline game could prove key against either Molcan or Millman, both seasoned competitors with successful top 100 stints under their belts.
Indian tennis fans will be eagerly awaiting Nagal’s final qualifying match, hoping to see him secure his entry into the Australian Open main draw and continue his journey on the biggest stage of tennis.
