ITF W25 Pune: Top seeds lose in singles, Rutuja Bhosale in doubles semis

Pune, December 23: Top seed Nefisa Berberovic, second-seeded Anna Danilina of Kazakhstan, third-seeded Chihiro Muramatsu of Japan were sent out packing in the quarter-finals of the women’s singles, while Rutuja Bhosale remained the only Indian in the draw reaching the doubles semifinals at the 20th  edition of the NECC Deccan ITF $25000 Womenโ€™s Tennis Tournament organised under the auspices of the ITF, AITA and MSLTA by Deccan Gymkhana and sponsored by National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC) and being played at the Deccan Gymkhana Tennis Courts.

In the quarter-finals, 698th ranked Ekaterina Reyngold of Russia played a superlative game to our top seed and world ranked 336th player Nefisa Berberovic of Bosnia Herzegovina  6-4, 2-6, 6-4.

In one of the best matches of the day, tall and lanky Uzbek fifth-seeded Nigina Abduraimova knocked out second-seeded Kazakh Anna Danilina  6-1, 2-6, 6-4.

In an all Japanese encounter unseeded Moyuka Uchijima out classes third-seeded Chihiro Muramatsu  6-2, 6-0;  regular to India fourth-seeded Diana Marcinkevica of Latvia was the only seed to survive as she ended the challenge of eighth-seeded Ukrainian Valeriya Strakhova 7-5, 7-6(2).

It was a disappointing day for Indians in the doubles quarterfinals, barring local girl Rutuja Bhosale no players could progress to the last four stage.

In the quarter-finals, fourth-seeded Rutuja Bhosale pairing with Japanese Hiroko Kuwata thrashed Sowjanya Bavisetti and Diana Marcinkevica  6-0, 6-1 to make the last four.

Top seeds Anna Danilina and Valeriya Strakhova stopped Indian pair of  Sathwika Sama and Saumya Vig  6-4, 6-3, while second seeds  Zhibek Kulambayeva and  Ekaterina Yashina were given a fight by Wildcard and young pair of Jennifer Luikham and Mihika Yadav before going down  6-1, 4-6, (10-6).
