Prajnesh Gunneswaran’s big run started last year at Stuttgart with the win over Denis Shapovalov and the rest was history. As this year’s tourney came around, Prajnesh’s run had been a bit indifferent due to the injury scares and lack of adequate match practice.

Prajnesh was drawn first to face the Italian Matteo Viola (ranked 250). The first set turned out to be a close one with neither player having a break point opportunity and Prajnesh won it 8-6 in the tie-break.

In the second set, Prajnesh was the dominant player all along and had as many as 6 break point opportunities but could not convert any of them. This proved decisive in the end as a combination of cramps and shoulder niggle came in and Prajnesh could not win a single point in the second tie-breaker. Prajnesh retired from the match soon after.
