Manas Dhamne Pushes Top 110 Rafael Jodar in Gritty Miami Masters Debut

India’s 18-year-old wildcard Manas Dhamne (ATP 460) proved he belongs on the big stage, delivering a high-quality performance despite a narrow opening-round qualifying loss at the ATP Masters 1000 Miami. Dhamne fell to Spain’s 19-year-old sensation Rafael Jodar (ATP 109) in a tightly contested straight-sets battle, 3-6, 6-7(4).

Set 1: A Battle of Inches

The opening set saw Dhamne fighting to stay alive as Jodar served for the set at 5-3. The young Indian earned four break-back points, showing remarkable composure under pressure. While Jodar neutralized three of them with massive serving, the fourth point turned into a grueling rally. Dhamne looked to have the opening, but a forehand down the line missed the mark by mere inches, allowing the Spaniard to escape.

Set 2: The Comeback Trail

Dhamne’s resilience was the story of the second set. Trailing 3-5 and facing a match-point scenario at 5-4, he displayed incredible shot-making to break Jodar’s serve and level the score. He repeated the feat at 6-5, forcing a tiebreak.

In the breaker, Dhamne surged to a 4-2 lead, putting the Spaniard on the ropes. However, Jodar – who recently claimed Top 25 scalps against Cam Norrie and Learner Tien – found an extra gear. The Spaniard reeled off five consecutive points to seal the victory.

The Takeaway

Though he didn’t get the win, Dhamne’s ability to go toe-to-toe with a player of Jodar’s caliber signals a bright future for Indian tennis. Taking a Top 110 player to a tiebreak in a Masters 1000 environment is a massive statement for the 18-year-old.
