Medvedev Ends Basavareddy’s Run in Hangzhou

HANGZHOU, China – World No. 18 Daniil Medvedev secured a decisive victory over American qualifier Nishesh Basavareddy in the Round of 16 at the Hangzhou Open on Saturday. The second-seeded Medvedev defeated the World No. 109 in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.

The match, which lasted one hour and 16 minutes, was the first-ever meeting between the two players.

Medvedev, a former World No. 1, demonstrated his veteran experience from the outset. After an even start at 2-2 in the first set, Medvedev went on a dominant nine-game streak, claiming the first set 6-2 and building a commanding 5-0 lead in the second.

Basavareddy, who had successfully battled through qualifying to make the main draw, showed resilience by breaking Medvedev’s serve as he served for the match at 5-1. The 20-year-old American then held his own serve to bring the set to 5-3, but Medvedev successfully served out the match on his second attempt.

The victory marks Medvedev’s 27th win of the season and his first since beginning work with a new coaching team. He advances to the quarterfinals, while Basavareddy’s strong run in Hangzhou comes to an end.
