Interview with Ronak Galaiya – A Young Tennis Protégé from Great Britain with Indian Roots

Meet Ronak Galaiya, a young tennis player from the UK with Indian roots. Ronak started playing when he was only four years old and has already played in big tournaments. In 2024, at 7 years old, he even won an Under-10 tournament at Melbourne Tennis Centre in Australia. Besides tennis, he enjoys other sports like cricket, golf, football, and hockey. Let’s get to know more about Ronak and his tennis journey below”

Q: Ronak, when did you start playing tennis?
Ronak: I first held a tennis racket when I was four years old. I started by playing with my dad, just hitting the ball for fun. I really enjoyed it. Soon, my dad found me a coach to help me out. Even then, I would wake up early before school and also play on weekends. That’s when I started to really love tennis.

Q: What made you like tennis?
Ronak: At first, it was just fun to hit the ball and spend time with my dad. Later, I liked the challenge of learning new shots. Tennis is not only about running and hitting, it also makes you think. That made me love it more.

Q: Where is your family from and where do you live now?
Ronak: My family is from Mumbai and Gujarat in India, but I was born in the UK. I live and train here. I was born here, so the UK has always been my home. But I still feel close to my Indian roots because of my family and culture.

Q: Where do you train now?
Ronak: I train at David Lloyd with my dad and also at Edgbaston Priory.

Q: When did you know tennis was more than just a hobby?
Ronak:
It’s a lot of fun and then played county and regional tournaments in the UK which took it to a different level. I really enjoyed competing and wanted to get better. But the biggest moment was in 2024, when I went to Australia and won the Under-10 tournament at the Melbourne Tennis Centre. Playing and winning there made me happy as I was actually on holiday.

Q: Who inspires you in tennis?
Ronak:
Carlos Alcaraz. I love how he plays with so much energy and passion. Off the court, he is very humble and kind. I want to be like that too.

Q: Does your Indian background inspire you?
Ronak:
Yes, it does. Even though I live in the UK, I feel very connected to my Indian roots. It makes me proud to carry both my culture and my love for tennis.

Q: What are your dreams for the future?
Ronak:
For now, I want to keep improving, play more international tournaments, and test myself against strong players. In the future, my dream is to play on the ATP Tour and inspire other kids who love tennis.
