US Open Juniors 2025: Maaya Rajeshwaran starts off with a win, huge battle awaits in next round

16-year-old and Junior World No. 54 Maaya Rajeshwaran made a memorable start to her maiden Grand Slam main draw appearance at the US Open Juniors 2025, defeating Junior World No. 128 Zhang Qianwei (China) in straight sets, 7-6(5), 6-3.

Zhang came into the match with solid form, having reached the quarterfinals at W15 Luan as a qualifier, the third round at J300 College Park, and finishing as a finalist at J100 Almaty earlier this season. Considering her momentum, this victory is a significant confidence booster for Maaya.

Earlier this year, Maaya featured at the French Open and Wimbledon Juniors as a qualifier, but this marks her first main draw win at a Grand Slam.

Up next, Maaya faces a huge challenge in the second round against second seed Hannah Klugman of Great Britain. Currently ranked Junior World No. 4, Klugman has been in exceptional form this season — she reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon Juniors, was a finalist at the French Open Juniors, and made the semifinals at J500 Milan.

Given her opponent’s form and pedigree, Maaya will need to dig deep and bring her very best tennis to the court. The Indian tennis community will be watching closely, rallying behind Maaya as she prepares for this exciting battle.
