Newport, RI – Indian tennis player Sahaja Yamalapalli delivered a noteworthy performance at the WTA 125 Hall of Fame Open this week, showcasing her growing prowess on the professional circuit by reaching the Round of 16.

Yamalapalli, currently ranked 334 in singles (as of July 7, 2025), began her campaign in Newport with a strong showing in the Round of 32. She secured a convincing straight-sets victory over Canada’s Katherine Sebov, winning 6-2, 6-2. This win highlighted her effectiveness on the grass courts of the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

Her journey continued into the Round of 16, where she faced a tougher challenge in the form of Australia’s Talia Gibson, the third seed of the tournament. Despite a valiant effort, Yamalapalli ultimately fell to Gibson in straight sets, 3-6, 4-6. The match, played on July 9, saw moments of competitive play from Yamalapalli, but Gibson’s higher ranking and experience ultimately prevailed.

While her run ended in the Round of 16, Yamalapalli’s performance at the Hall of Fame Open demonstrates positive momentum in her 2025 season. Reaching the second round of a WTA 125 event, especially on a surface like grass which can be challenging, is a significant step in her development. With a career-high ranking of 284, Yamalapalli continues to make strides in her professional career, aiming to climb further up the WTA rankings. Her focus now will likely shift to upcoming tournaments as she seeks to build on this week’s encouraging results.
