India’s No.1 tennis player Sumit Nagal (ATP Rank 296) continued his superb run at the ATP Challenger 100 in Trieste, defeating local favorite Marco Cecchinato (ATP Rank 300) in straight sets to book a spot in the quarterfinals.
✅ [R16] (Q) Sumit Nagal (🇮🇳, 296) def. (WC) Marco Cecchinato (🇮🇹, 300)
📊 Score: 6-2, 6-4
Nagal, who came through qualifying, showed composure and control throughout the match against the experienced Italian, a former World No.16 and 2018 Roland-Garros semifinalist. Cecchinato had recently won a Challenger title in the last week of June, but couldn’t find answers to Nagal’s consistent baseline play and physical intensity on clay.
With this win, Nagal advances to the quarterfinals, where he will face 17-year-old Czech talent Maxim Mrva (ATP Rank 501), a former Junior World No.2, in what promises to be a battle between experience and youth.
This marks Nagal’s fourth consecutive straight-set victory in Trieste, further underlining his confidence and sharpness on clay.
The Indian ace is gaining momentum in Italy and will be eyeing a semifinal berth tomorrow.
