Indian singles sensation Sumit Nagal’s quest for a spot in the main draw of the 2025 French Open ended in the second round of qualifying, marking a rare miss for him in a Grand Slam this season.
Nagal, currently ranked 170th in the world, began his Roland Garros qualifying campaign with a commanding 6-1, 6-1 victory over American Mitchell Krueger. This dominant performance in the first round instilled confidence and suggested a strong push for the main draw.
However, his journey was cut short in the second qualifying round, where he faced Austria’s Jurij Rodionov (ranked 225th). In a match that lasted just under an hour and a half, Nagal fell 2-6, 4-6. Despite a brief comeback attempt in the second set, Nagal couldn’t maintain his momentum against Rodionov’s consistent play.
This defeat at Roland Garros is a notable deviation from Nagal’s impressive record in 2024, where he successfully qualified for or gained direct entry into the main draws of all four Grand Slams – a significant achievement for an Indian singles player. While this marks a setback in his 2025 Grand Slam aspirations, Nagal is expected to regroup and shift his focus to the upcoming grass-court season, aiming to build momentum for Wimbledon qualifiers.
