“Zarina Diyas has a very different kind of game style” – 15 year old Maaya Revathi after defeating former World No. 31

Fifteen-year-old Indian tennis prodigy Maaya Revathi continues to shine at the WTA L&T 125 Mumbai Open, securing a victory against WTA No. 353 Zarina Diyas. Revathi won the match 6-3, 3-2, with Diyas retiring due to injury. This marks Revathi’s second encounter with Diyas in as many weeks, adding an intriguing layer to her tournament journey.

What were your thoughts when you learned you would be competing against Zarina Diyas again, especially after having played her just last week?

Well, I had played her last week also, so it wasn’t the first time. It wasn’t the way I wanted to win, with her retiring, but I’m still happy to get through.

What was the difference between this match and last week’s match? You had a close 6-1, 7-5 loss against her last week. Were there any tactical adjustments you made to your game?

Yeah, I mean, I knew where I made the mistakes last time. She has a very different kind of game style, and I wasn’t used to it at first. But this time, I was pretty prepared. The way I practiced was also similar to what I had to play against her.

What will be your strategy in the next match against Mei Yamaguchi?

I haven’t seen her play much. I just saw a bit. She is a typical Asian player. She will make me play a lot. It would be a very tough match. I’m not going to get points easily. I’ll have to make my way through to win points.
