Sumit Nagal, WR #78 and India’s No. 1 Tennis player, produced a stunning comeback to end his 8-match losing streak in the first qualifying round of the Swiss Indoors Basel (ATP 500). Facing Argentina’s Facundo Diaz Acosta (WR #67), Nagal showed immense resilience in a marathon match that lasted nearly 4 hours. Despite losing the first set 5-7, he fought back in a tightly contested second set, winning it 7-6(3) in a tiebreak. Nagal was down a mini-break in the tiebreak. The third set saw Nagal dig deep, battling physical issues, including visible cramps, but he held his nerve to win another tiebreak 7-6(5). Diaz Acosta was serving for the match at 5-4 in the third set, but an ailing Nagal battled through to break back.
After the match, Nagal expressed his satisfaction: “Happy with the win! Proud of myself for finding a way to pull through in this match—definitely one to remember 💪🏽.” The victory marks his 12th career win over Top 100 opposition, and 6th of 2024. With this, he sets up a final qualifying round clash against Australia’s James Duckworth (WR #63) tomorrow.
This win really re-demonstrated Nagal’s fighting spirit, and fans will be eager to see if he can recover and carry the momentum into his match against Duckworth on Sunday.
