Somdev Devvarman and Purav Raja File Petition Against AITA Over Sports Code Violations Ahead of Elections

Former Indian tennis players Somdev Devvarman and Purav Raja have approached the Delhi High Court, alleging that the All India Tennis Association (AITA) has violated the National Sports Development Code of India (2011). The petition, filed just days ahead of AITA’s elections scheduled for September 28, challenges the association’s compliance with the Sports Code.

Somdev and Purav claim that AITA has not fulfilled its obligation to reserve seats for athletes in its executive committee, a mandatory provision under the Sports Code. The petition emphasizes the need for AITA to follow the code before the elections, urging the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to intervene. The players have also requested the court to appoint a retired Supreme Court or High Court judge as an independent administrator to oversee the AITA’s operations and ensure transparency in the election process.

This legal action reflects growing discontent within Indian tennis circles, with players like Sumit Nagal and Mukund Sasikumar also raising concerns about AITA’s management. The petition underscores the importance of ensuring that the upcoming elections are conducted fairly and in strict compliance with the governing regulations.
