Doubles Dynamite: Ankita Raina’s Semifinal Splash at ITF W35 Roehampton

Bringing a perfect blend of skill and suspense to the court, India’s Ankita Raina, partnering with Great Britain’s Sarah Beth Grey, served up a storm at the W35 Roehampton tournament. The top-seeded duo’s journey was nothing short of a page-turner, filled with nail-biting moments and edge-of-your-seat action.

Kicking off their campaign, Raina and Grey showed why they were the favorites, dispatching the British-Japanese pair of Lauryn John-Baptiste and Eri Shimizu with a convincing 6-4, 6-2 victory in the Round of 16.

The quarterfinals brought a new challenge in the form of the American Campana sisters, Anna and Carolyn. Our duo started strong, claiming the first set 6-2. But the Campanas weren’t going down without a fight, pushing back to take the second set 6-2. In the deciding super tiebreak, Raina and Grey held their nerve, clinching a thrilling 10-8 victory. Talk about keeping the spectators on their toes!

But it was the semifinal that truly showcased the heart and grit of Raina and Grey. Facing Australia’s Gabriella Da Silva Fick and France’s Alice Robbe, they found themselves on the back foot, dropping the first set 2-6. Lesser pairs might have faltered, but not these two. They clawed their way back into the match, forcing a second-set tiebreak.

And what a tiebreak it was! Down 6-7 and then 7-8, Raina and Grey stared down not one, but two match points. With the coolness of cucumbers and the hearts of lions, they saved both, eventually taking the tiebreak 10-8!

The final set was a battle royale, with both pairs leaving everything on the court. In the end, Da Silva Fick and Robbe squeaked out an 11-9 win in the super tiebreak, but not before Raina and Grey had given them the fight of their lives.

While they may not have reached the final, Ankita Raina and Sarah Beth Grey’s performance was a shining example of their resilience and the sheer excitement they bring to the doubles court. Raina, in particular, continues to wave the Indian flag high on the international tennis circuit.
