Indian players that have made history at the prestigious Indian Wells Masters tournament

Three legendary Indian players have etched their names in the history books of Indian Wells Masters or BNP Paribas Open tournament. The prestigious tournament is held annually at Indian Wells, California, USA.

  • Leander Paes: With Czech partner Martin Damm in 2007, Paes became the first Indian to lift the Masters 1000 title at Indian Wells. This was their 2nd title of the season together. The 5th seed pair of Paes/Damm defeated top seed in the semis and 6th seed in the finals to lift the title.
  • Sania Mirza: A pioneer in Indian women’s tennis, Mirza won the Indian Wells doubles title twice. In 2011, Sania paired up with Elena Vesnina to lift the title for the first time. Sania also won the title in 2015 alongside Martina Hingis. Sania Mirza was also finalists in the 2012 and 2014 edition of the Indian Wells.
  • Rohan Bopanna: The current world no 1 pair of Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden are also the defending champion at Indian Wells this edition. Bopanna became the oldest ATP Masters 1000 champion at age 43 when he won the Indian Wells doubles title in 2023.
