Rutuja Bhosale & Vaishnavi Adkar · Post-Match Press Conference Q&A

Question 1 · Re-Teaming After the Bengaluru W100 & Staying Solid in Crucial Moments Against the 4th Seeds

Congratulations on your win! Just want to ask you about your thoughts today in terms of winning and about your partnership as well — could you please give us more info about how this works out?

Rutuja Bhosale

No, definitely it is good to get a win here. It is our 1st match after a really long time — we played a W100 in Bangalore at the start of the year. We did not do too well there, so Vaishu tried to get out of playing with me here, I think! (Laughs) No, I am just kidding — it is all the same. So yeah, it was fun, it was good to be back with her, and hopefully we can play more matches together.

Vaishnavi Adkar

I think every time playing with her, she has got a lot of experience, and she is solid on the net and from the baseline as well — she knows what she is doing, so she really carries the team well! (Laughs) So it is always good to be on the same team as her. And yeah, I mean 1st rounds are always a bit tricky, and I am really glad that we were able to get the win — I think they were the 4th seeds. So I think it was a pretty good match overall, and we really stayed solid in the crucial moments.

Vaishnavi Adkar (IND, 359) and Rutuja Bhosale (IND, 128) reeled off 6 of the final 7 games from 0-3 down in the 2nd set to seal a 6-4, 6-4 win at the SDAT Tennis Stadium in Chennai.
Question 2 · Why Seedings Don’t Matter at This Level & Stepping on Court Without a Doubles Practice

Just following up on your statement on beating the 4th seeds — what was running in your mind? Because it is not just a tough match, it is a straight-sets win, so there must be a lot of thought process going on and a lot of conversation on how you want to approach this match.

Rutuja Bhosale

I mean, at this level, I do not think the seeds matter — everyone is good. I have played these girls before; I played Maddie [Madeleine Brooks] a couple of weeks ago, so the girls know me and I know how they play. Definitely we were not able to practice doubles because obviously Vaishu is playing singles, and she has to stay ready for her singles matches — the conditions are really tough here, and you can see a lot of players struggling physically. So I also do not want to burden her with, “Okay, she has to play doubles with me!” (Laughs) But we are trying to — we know each other well, so we are trying to work around her schedule. Just going into it, we just have to play our game, and at the end of the day we know each other so we are going to fight together. Today was the day that went our way, and we actually enjoyed playing out there, so I think that was the key for us.

“It is really nice to have your whole team here, because the whole year you are just traveling by yourself or there is just 1 person with you. Here, everyone is taking care of you and you just have to switch off and switch on on the tennis court.”

Question 3 · Adapting to Exhausting Chennai Conditions, Feeding Off Home Crowd Energy & Having Their Full Support Teams Courtside

In terms of the previous edition of the Chennai Open, you had a good run on the doubles side with a different partner. Does that help you in terms of adapting to the conditions and how you want to play in the doubles?

Vaishnavi Adkar

I think yeah, the conditions are similar, but it is never easy to play in these conditions — especially I also had a tough singles match, so it is quite exhausting. But at the same time, everyone deals with this, so we just have to be ready for it. Also, home conditions are more suitable for us, so it is a good thing, and we have also got the crowd support — that also really helps with the energy. And as a team, we gel with each other really well, so that is also an added bonus.

Rutuja Bhosale

And it is really nice to have your whole team here, because the whole year you are just traveling by yourself or there is just 1 person with you. Here, I think Vaishu has a really big team, and even me — my husband is here, my physio, my trainer — so it is an added bonus where everyone is taking care of you and you just have to switch off and switch on on the tennis court. So that is really, really helpful.
