The Indian junior, ranked 19th in the world, was in control from the outset, using her consistency off both wings to keep Combs, ranked 92, on the back foot for large stretches of the match. Dropping just four games across two sets, Maaya rarely looked troubled, closing out the contest in straight sets to make a confident start to her campaign.

Combs, appearing in the main draw with home advantage, was unable to find rhythm against Maaya’s steady baseline game. The Indian broke serve early in both sets and didn’t look back, converting her chances efficiently to avoid any real danger of a comeback.
