“We were so close to losing in Round 1, and now we are champions” – Yuki Bhambri

Yuki Bhambri and Alexei Popyrin scripted a fairytale run at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, clinching the doubles title in stunning fashion. The unseeded duo overcame early setbacks and tough opponents to lift the trophy, marking a memorable moment in their careers.

Reflecting on their incredible journey, Bhambri shared his disbelief at how things unfolded:
“Honestly, the key for us was having fun on the court. We went match by match. We were so close to losing out in the 1st round, so to be in the final today and win it, it’s unbelievable. I don’t think I had ever dreamt of that. Alexei is an incredible player. We all know he is a good singles player, but he has a great doubles career ahead of him as well.”

For Popyrin, the victory held special meaning as it came in a city he calls home:
“I grew up in Dubai. I have come to this tournament a lot as a kid. Have also played a lot of junior tournaments here at Aviation Club. Shoutout to everyone who supported me. It’s always special for me coming back here in Dubai, and even more special to win a title – be it singles or doubles. I would like to thank Yuki as well for being an unbelievable teacher in doubles. I don’t play doubles that much. So it was an unbelievable week.”

With this win, Bhambri continues India’s strong legacy in doubles tennis, joining the likes of Mahesh Bhupathi, Rohan Bopanna, and Leander Paes, who have previously triumphed in Dubai. Meanwhile, Popyrin showcased his versatility, proving that despite being a singles specialist, he can thrive on the doubles court as well.
