Abhilasha Bista, Nepal’s sole professional women’s tennis player, has been making waves on the Indian tennis circuit for the past few years. In a recent interview, she shared insights into her tennis journey, her experience playing in India, and how she manages to balance her athletic career with her computer science studies.
Playing Conditions in India
Having played in Bangalore and Mysore, Abhilasha finds the weather conditions favorable for tennis. Although she encountered some rain in Bangalore, she noted that the overall climate in both cities is quite pleasant. She also addressed the altitude difference, stating that it doesn’t affect her much since Kathmandu, her hometown, is situated at a higher altitude.
The Indian Tennis Circuit
Abhilasha’s frequent participation in tournaments in India is due to several factors. The ease of travel from Nepal, cultural similarities, and her understanding of the language make India a convenient and comfortable choice.
Early Tennis Days and Influences
Abhilasha’s tennis journey began at the age of seven when she started playing at her school. She later progressed to training with coaches at the association courts and had the opportunity to represent Nepal in international tournaments. These experiences, along with the support she received in Nepal, fueled her passion for professional tennis.
Abhilasha has been fortunate to train under experienced coaches from the US, Spain, Sri Lanka, and the UK. Currently, she trains at Team Tennis Nepal, an academy in Kathmandu, under the guidance of Nepali coach Raj Kumar Lama.
Balancing Studies and Tennis
Despite the demands of a professional tennis career, Abhilasha is also pursuing a degree in computer science. She credits her time management skills and prioritization for successfully juggling both. She has always excelled in academics and believes that education is crucial.
Memorable Moments in Games
Representing Nepal in the Khelo India Games, SAF games, and Asian Games has been a source of pride for Abhilasha. She fondly remembers winning the women’s doubles bronze medal with her partner at the 2019 South Asian Games, a historic moment for Nepal. She also cherishes the experience of playing alongside her team in the Khelo India University Games and witnessing top players from Asia at the Asian Games in China.
Friends on the Indian Circuit
Having been a part of the Indian tennis scene since a young age, Abhilasha has formed strong bonds with fellow players. She appreciates their kindness, helpfulness, and camaraderie.
Indian Tournaments: The Good and the Room for Improvement
Abhilasha commends the organization of tournaments in India, particularly the provision of water, towels, and food. However, she points out that court booking can be challenging and suggests improvement in this area.
Abhilasha Bista’s dedication to both tennis and education is truly inspiring. As she continues to excel in her career and studies, she serves as a role model for aspiring athletes and students alike.
